On being confident during auditions
“Anytime I walk into something apologetic or wondering if I’m good enough, I never get it. There’s a certain lack of ownership that people can detect. When I walk in and own it, that’s when I usually get it.”
On worrying about her looks
“How much time have I wasted on diets and what I look like? People are saying ‘We love you and love what you do’ and you’re sitting there thinking ‘I’m not skinny enough or pretty enough.’ It’s taken a lot of work to get over that.”
On what she does in her downtime
“When I’m working, I sleep very little,” she says. “When I’m not working, I can kill 12hours of sleep easily.”
Why she fights so hard against attempts to keep Latinos from voting
“I was in Arizona speaking to a group of young people who are documented and have every right to be here and they live in fear of being harassed because of what they look like,” she says. “The human reaction is to recoil, to keep your head down and stay out of trouble. But what we should be doing is raising our voices.”
What her household was like:
“I definitely come from a challenging background socio-economically and I wasn’t ever sheltered from that. But I wanted to stay young. I wasn’t in a hurry to have sex or do drugs. I remember being afraid to even kiss a boy.”
How she bucked the stereotypes:
“I definitely didn’t look like a hard-core chola.”
